MGB

The successor to the MGA was the MGB which first appeared in 1962, consisting of one of the first monocoque bodied open cars. It was fitted with 1800cc engine, four speed gearbox, independent front suspension, disc brakes as standard and available with both disc and wire wheels. Initially only produced as an open two-seater, but in 1965 joined by a striking 2+2 compact fixed head GT model. Production levels soared and ultimately over half a million MGB’s were produced, again many were exported, with the USA the main recipients, but around the world as well. The GT was available for a short time with a 3500cc V8 engine. Production of the MGB ceased in 1980 and with it the open two seater concept which had been the backbone of the design philosophy temporarily shelved. The badge continued on saloon cars.

British Motor Heritage recommenced the MGB bodyshell production in 1988, and both the Roadster and GT shells continue to be available. It allowed the production on the MG R V8 in the early nineties. Fitted with a 3900cc V8 engine and luxuriously appointed it sold around the world, many to Japan. Its production run was only 2000 cars, to herald the return of MG to volume production of open two seat cars planned for 1995. The RV8 model sold out very quickly!
